About

Why Build Companion exists.

A renovation or new build is one of the biggest financial decisions most people ever make. We built the system we wished existed for the homeowner's side of the table.

From the founder

My name is Sean Mahoney. I've dedicated my life to the construction industry.

I started working in construction at just 16 years old, and now, with nearly two decades of hands-on experience, I've had the opportunity to work on everything from small bathroom renovations to luxury homes and residential projects valued at over $30 million.

For five years, I ran SGM Building alongside my father, Greg. During that time, we delivered a wide range of renovation and new home projects, gaining firsthand experience in every stage of the building process — from planning and budgeting through to construction and completion.

One thing became clear throughout my career: the clients with the best building experiences almost always had someone on their side. On high-value projects, wealthy homeowners often employed independent project managers whose role was to explain complex decisions, keep budgets under control, identify potential issues early, and ensure builders remained accountable throughout the project.

Unfortunately, most everyday homeowners don't have access to that level of guidance.

In recent years, I've also seen an increasing number of builders become financially distressed or fail to complete projects, leaving families under enormous financial and emotional pressure. Choosing the wrong builder or making costly decisions at the wrong time can add tens of thousands of dollars to a project and create months of unnecessary stress.

After nearly 20 years in the industry, I realised that building knowledge shouldn't be reserved for wealthy clients who can afford professional project managers. Every homeowner deserves the confidence to make informed decisions, protect their investment, and enjoy the building process.

That's why I created Build Companion.

My goal is simple: to give everyday homeowners the same level of guidance and project management principles that high-net-worth clients receive. Build Companion is designed to help you understand the building process, make informed decisions, better manage your budget, ask the right questions, and reduce the risk of costly mistakes before they happen.

Building or renovating your home will likely be one of the biggest financial commitments you'll ever make. My mission is to help you approach it with confidence, knowledge, and the tools to achieve the best possible outcome.

Nearly 20 years in construction

Started on-site at 16 — this comes from doing the work, not studying it from the outside.

Bathroom renovations to $30M+ homes

The same budget-and-decision discipline applies at every scale — it's just usually only offered at one end of it.

Real jobs, real clients, real budgets — not a theory about how construction works.

Every support email, read personally

Build Companion is a small, focused operation. If you write in, I'm the one reading it.

My promise

Everything here is based on real-world experience — not theory.

If a checklist, template, or guide doesn't genuinely help homeowners make better decisions, it doesn't make it into Build Companion.

My goal is to give you the confidence and knowledge I would want my own family to have before starting a build or renovation. If Build Companion helps you avoid just one major mistake, ask a better question, or make a more informed decision, then I've achieved exactly what I set out to do. — Sean

The business, plainly

A real, accountable company — not a faceless platform.

Build Companion is Australian owned and operated, based in Sydney. Launched 2026. We're a small, focused team — not a venture-backed platform chasing growth, just a system built to be genuinely useful. A one-off $99 purchase, nothing else — we don't sell your data, run ads inside the product, or take referral fees from builders we might recommend.

What we believe

The principles behind how we build this.

Homeowners deserve the same structure their builder already has.

You shouldn't be at a structural disadvantage in the biggest financial decision of your life just because you've only done this once.

Specificity beats generic advice.

"Ask good questions" isn't useful. The actual question, the actual register, the actual template you fill in — that's useful.

A system used weekly beats a guide read once and shelved.

If it's not something you open every week of your project, it won't be there the week you actually need it.

Transparency about costs prevents most disputes before they start.

Most budget blowouts and disputes aren't bad luck — they're costs and decisions nobody had a system to see coming.

Who we built this for

Busy professionals with the money to build — not necessarily the industry experience to manage it.

Build Companion is built for homeowners spending somewhere between $150,000 and $1.5 million on a renovation or new home build, who have the resources to take this on but not necessarily years of construction-industry experience to manage it with confidence.

Who this isn't for

We'll tell you when you don't need this.

If you're an owner-builder running your own trades, a tradesperson who already knows this world, or price-shopping a small DIY job — you likely already have the structure this system provides. We'd rather say that plainly than sell you something you don't need.

Being upfront

What this is — and what it isn't.

No guaranteed outcomes.

No system can promise your build goes perfectly. What it can do is give you the structure to catch problems earlier and make better-informed decisions along the way.

Not financial or legal advice.

This is an organisational and educational tool. For advice specific to your situation — contracts, finance, or anything else — you should still engage qualified professionals.

Transparent, one-off pricing.

$99, once. No subscription, no hidden fees, no upsells buried in the checkout.
